A database is an
organized collection of data in digital format. It can also be termed database as Electronic File Management
System.
What is database? |
The term database correctly
specify to the data & their organized structure/schema.
Traditionally databases are organized by fields, records, & files. A field
is a single piece of information; a record is one complete set of fields; and a
file is a collection of records. For example, a
telephone book is analogous to a file. It contains a list of records, each of
which consists of three fields: name, address, and telephone number.
DBMS (Database Management
System) is a collection of programs that enables you to enter, organize, and
select data in a database system. Well known DBMSs include Oracle, IBM DB2, Microsoft
SQL Server, Microsoft Access, PostgreSQL, MySQL, and SQLite.
A database
is not generally portable across different DBMS, but different DBMSs can
inter-operate to some level by using standards like SQL and ODBC together to support a single application.
