What is Database?

A database is an organized collection of data in digital format. It can also be termed database as Electronic File Management System.

What is database?

The term database correctly specify to the data & their organized structure/schema. Traditionally databases are organized by fields, records, & files. A field is a single piece of information; a record is one complete set of fields; and a file is a collection of records. For example, a telephone book is analogous to a file. It contains a list of records, each of which consists of three fields: name, address, and telephone number.

DBMS (Database Management System) is a collection of programs that enables you to enter, organize, and select data in a database system. Well known DBMSs include Oracle, IBM DB2, Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Access, PostgreSQL, MySQL, and SQLite.

A database is not generally portable across different DBMS, but different DBMSs can inter-operate to some level by using standards like SQL and ODBC together to support a single application.
