How to Install & Configure the SNMP service on Wndows XP/Vista/2003 ?

What is SNMP Service ?

The internet protocol SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) is being used in network management systems to monitor network-attached devices such as Computers, Servers, Routers, Switches, Gateways, Wireless Access Points, VoIP Phones, and so on as per requirement of administrative attention. In Windows running OS as XP, Vista or 2003 does not turn on SNMP service by default, thus users need to manually install and enable the SNMP service.


Install the SNMP service


To install the SNMP service follow the instructions.

1. Open Windows Components wizard.

Note: To open the Windows Components Wizard in Windows XP/2003, click Start, click Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove programs, and then click Add/Remove Windows Components.

In Windows Vista, click Start button, then go to Control Panel. Click on Programs link and then click on Turn Windows features on or off. If you’re prompted with User Account Control dialog, click “Continue”. 

2. In Components, click Management and Monitoring Tools (but do not select or clear its check box), and then click Details.

3. Select the Simple Network Management Protocol check box, and click OK.

4. Click Next.

5. SNMP starts automatically after installation.


How to Configure SNMP Agent, Traps &  Security ?

To configure SNMP agent, trap & security follow the instructions.

1. In command prompt write services.msc.

2. From the Services console's right pane, double-click SNMP Service.

3. Click the agent, trap or security tab to configure.
